Nichols Rich wedding in Portland October eighteenth
Nichols and Winifred Rich were married in Portland Oregon on October eighteenth. A series of social events follows including a Halloween party hosted by Mrs. Ward at 1227 Grand Avenue and a luncheon at Mrs. W W Stevenson’s home. A reception for Rev J F Catlin and his wife will be held at the Baptist church in honor of the new pastor.

Nonpareil club hosts afternoon gathering

Arcadia lodge A F and A M held a two session third degree meeting Thursday with dinner at six. Visitors from Nevada and Boone attended. Also noted: Lew Gamrath and Ellen Bigum married in Des Moines Saturday and plan to reside at the Gamrath house on Kellogg Ave. Neewollah club hosted a masquerade party with about forty guests and refreshments.

Mrs Hultz Hosts Bridge Parties and Socials
Mrs. Hultz entertained twenty eight at bridge in a series of gatherings with a two course luncheon served by the hostess and Miss Norma Lee and Miss Gladys Hultz. Another party is planned tomorrow and another later date by Mrs. Hultz. Mrs. H F Brown hosted luncheon for about twenty last Friday. Mrs. G H Tilden of Seattle was expected but summoned home. The rooms were decorated with flowers and a refined luncheon served. Pythian Sisters hosted Sir Knights for Halloween, with readings music pumpkin pie and games. Catholic students association and Ladies Altar society held a supper and dance in Adams hall with Des Moines orchestra. Miss Bonnie Costigan celebrated eleventh birthday with decorations and cake. Knights of Sir Gala class for Sunday echoe at Congregational church. teachers and guests from Methodist church attended. Dr. Lee Beverly and Miss Ada Griffith were married in Des Moines. A home wedding followed at 7 pm at US Grand Avenue for Miss Jennie Beatrice Williams and Mr. Frederick Bernick Jr. with a full receiving line and ceremonial elements. The Perrys hosted two company card nights on Fifth Street with dainty luncheon. Eastern Star members held Halloween party at Masonic hall with costumes and contests. R A E C met at Mrs. Hall’s for regular business and social time. one member plans to move to Denver. Cosmopolitan club hosts a foreign-student party at the Schmidt home with guests from several countries and a program. Miss Bernick’s wedding to Mr. Bernick is noted. he is a Des Moines professional engineer. Funeral services for an Ames resident were held at M E church with Odd Fellows at the grave.

Melvin Brooks Birth and Death in Early Ames History
Melvin Brooks born in York state March 28 383 percent and died at Methodist hospital Des Moines Monday October 30 1911. He came to Ames in 1865 and was a familiar genial figure. He suffered a stroke in June 1910 and spent his final days in Des Moines hospital until death. He was a devout Methodist and longtime I C O F member. Survived by one brother James Brooks of Lucas SD and a nephew and niece. funeral attended by St. Louis and Missouri Valley connections. Community calls him a good citizen.

Rollin Hunter in a Serious Condition
Mr. KR C Hunter of Sibley Iowa brother of Mrs J B Kooser and husband of Stella McLain-Lawrence formerly of Ames is in very serious condition from cancer on the neck. The growth discovered last spring led to three tumor operations but recently grew more pronounced. They traveled to Chicago for an operation but surgeons refused to operate as the growth encroached on the jugular vein. Mr Kooser returned to Ames while Mrs Kooser remains with the Hunters in Sibley.
