Hammock Fire Escape Demonstrated by Ames School Board

The Ames school board tested the Hammock Fire Escape at the south side school with students and staff observing. The canvas device unrolls from the window, cushions descent, and lands safely on the ground. The board shows interest in ordering several escapes for wards schools and a public event followed with band and veterans in attendance.

Mayor Galen Tilden proclaims May 30 1908 a sacred day in Ames urging all business places to close from noon to 4 pm in respect for Memorial Day and honoring the Grand Army of the Republic with Civil War veterans and citizens observing the occasion.

A detailed schedule lists graveside decoration at local cemeteries at 10 a.m. 1:30 p.m. ceremonies at the Armory and parade to Ames Cemetery. Bob Clark of Story County announces a June 10 shoot for the silver trophy cup. He says this will be his last event for a while unless attendance improves. He has funded two prior shoots with poor turnout and hopes at least twenty shooters appear to make it interesting.

Doctor studies Ames milk and eggs production methods

Dr. H. E. Kirchner of the Iowa State Sanitarium visited the college to study the dairy and poultry farm practices at the experiment station. He plans to establish a similar farm at the tuberculosis institution in Iowa City to secure fresh milk and eggs for patient care, aligning with the Ames model.

A Whirl Around the Block Pony Run Ends Calmly

Mrs. Walter Morris pulled her ponies from the country and collected Edward at Ed Rutherford’s, then drove toward town. Edward rode in the buggy while Mrs. Morris rang a bell, but the ponies bolted down Story Street to the city hall and Main street. The boy was frightened but unharmed.
