Rev. John T. Houser pastor of the Church of Christ preached a corn gospel from a hay pulpit to farmers from Story and adjoining counties. He urged testing seed corn after Prof. P. G. Holden warned Iowa harvests depend on reliable seed. The outreach used hundreds of ears, 150 bottles, and germination displays to illustrate seed quality.
The letter dated February 20 and addressed to James Trewin, president of the Board, reports the resignation of Dr. Albert Boynton Storms as town president in an Iowa town. The resignation, to take effect August 31 1910, urges extension literature on seed corn and召 inviting local farmers to heed the warning. Iowa State College was read and accepted at a Cedar Rapids board meeting yesterday.
On Monday afternoon a rear-end crash occurred as a fast freight struck the tail end of the Merry-go-round train near the Northwestern depot. Both crews aboard escaped injury. The flagman’s late warning and a curved track contributed, prompting an internal inquiry with no hastened decision on a new supervisor.
Ames high school debate teams who defeated Marshalltown return for a dual with Indianola high school. The Ames affirmative will face Indianola negative and the Ames negative will meet Indianola affirmative with judges from Winterset Des Moines Fort Dodge Nevada and Des Moines.
Jack Hamilton retired after three months as night marshal and Art McCoy succeeded him. McCoy will serve until the end of the current city administration and has been acting marshal for the past two years, described as a competent man.
Walter Canaday of Marshalltown has taken possession of the Ames hotel. He now conducts the hostelry and will decide on future changes. The Smiths moved to Dakota this week, but the staff is retained to keep the Ames hotel as a traveling man’s stopping place.
A fire started in the basement of Central Hall at the college yesterday forenoon. The blaze traced to wiring in a large dynamo powering the building fans. Five hundred students helped battle the flames until two chemical extinguishers stopped the fire. No major damage beyond smoke and the dynamo being out of commission.
Underwood a well known figure in Ames was taken back to the inebriate asylum at Knoxville Monday by Sheriff Warrick. He had been a patient at the Knoxville institution a couple of years ago but was discharged after four short.
A period of treatment preceded a parole violation, after which the sheriff deemed it necessary to take the individual back into custody.
Frank Theis a Judish pharmacy clerk has shown unusual behavior lately. He revealed he will marry Miss Daisy Mae Babcock next Tuesday evening at the bride's mother home in Farnhamville Iowa confirming the upcoming wedding.
W. H. Toms, a farmer east of town on the Nevada road, was lured by a stranger to a dark secluded spot in Des Moines, slugged, and robbed of a fur coat and heirloom gold watch. He reported the crime to police after the assault and loss.
