Ames College News Highlights Big Weekend Events

Ames College reports a busy period with campus visits from alumni and guests, a junior class play The Merchant of Venice in the chapel, and a long list of faculty and student movements. Field meet results show Ames finishing second behind Drake, with records in mile relay and hammer and discus throws. Excursions from Rockford and Keokuk County draw hundreds to campus, while preparations for commencement and a large tent on campus continue. Jack Watson, famed trainer for Grinnell, signs a three year deal to coach Ames athletes, boosting expectations for future success.

Ames to Add Infantry Company to Iowa National Guard

Ames plans an infantry company in the Iowa National Guard Fifty fifth. The unit will replace Glenwood Co C and has raised 2500 dollars for an armory. Adjutant General Beyers will finalize arrangements with Rock Rapids to replace Hampton. Ames will host mustering in tonight or tomorrow, with rifle-range duties at Cedar Rapids next week. The Ames High School class of 1904 held its class day at the Congregational church with graduates performing as one.

P. E. O. Book Social Ends Year With Party

The P. E. O. society shifted from a June picnic to a Tuesday book social at Prof. and Mrs. C. F. Curtiss home on the college campus. Nearly one hundred attendees donated books to the Carnegie library and subscribed to a book fund while enjoying book-inspired games and Frappe and cakes. The event marked the group's last meeting of the year with the next session in September.

Decoration Day closure and town events noted

The local school closed for Decoration Day as ordered by the board. Interlocking plant work began last week. Ottumwa visitor Will Lytie spent weekend at home. Chicago visitor Mrs Jole Kinman came to see sister Mrs L G Roseveld. Geo and Carl Rosenfeld shelling corn for shipment. Mrs G Hireman from Des Moines visiting parents. Large turnout at Ames Decoration Day exercises. Maggie Cavanaugh returns from Coon Rapids after brother in law’s death. Fenton held a school picnic Friday evening. Mr H Shutes dies after illness. funeral at Congregational Church and burial near Luther.

Miss Bessie Stewart married Mr Sam Allen at the brides parents home near Gil bert Station with Rev Wilson of the U B church officiating. Only immediate relatives attended. The couple will reside with Mr and Mrs L Allen on the farm five miles north of Ames.

Daniel Deal obituary from Iowa editor

Daniel Deal was born December 9 1839 in Clay County Indiana. He moved to Story County Iowa with his parents in 1849 and married Melissa Hussong June 11 1863. They had nine children seven living and a brother. He fought in the Civil War until August 1862 and was wounded at Shiloh. He died May 21 at 10 05 p.m. after a long illness with consumption. The funeral was held Thursday at the U B church with Rev O L Wilson and the G A R directing.

Funeral for Charles Mathews in Gilbert

The funeral for Charles Mathews, 21, who died from a lightning strike while working on a fence on the Mathews farm, was held Friday at the Congregational church in Gilbert. Interment followed at Gilbert Cemetery. His brothers and Ernest Hunter survived, with J H Allen unharmed.
