Reminiscences of the Old Super Mill on Skunk River

The article recalls the early Story County sawmill and grist mill at the Skunk River site eight miles north of the city. It notes T. K. Soper’s first mill, later owners Hipshear & Egelberger, and the famed Soper’s Mill and Soper’s Superlative buckwheat flour. It covers millers J. G. Yelton and Uncle Jimmie Noble, later P. J. Swearinger, production scales, prices, and buckwheat demand, dam reconstruction, decline due to water supply, and the site as a social gathering spot with picnics, fishing, and romance. The old building has been removed, leaving the mill frame as a county landmark.
