Ames celebrated the Fourth with a park program after a sweltering day. The 51st Iowa Minstrels entertained, fireworks impressed, and races like the 100 yard dash and wheelbarrow event occurred as residents from Des Moines to Boone gathered for a community celebration.

Ames Woman Mrs C E Holmes Dies After Smallpox

Mrs C E Holmes dies Monday night from small pox and complications after Thursday illness. Burial at sunrise Tuesday. Rose Shafer Holmes, about thirty, born in Benton County Iowa, wife of E Holmes, left three children Carl Gladys Harry and sister Mrs H Banks of Ames. Funeral follows June 27 1900 at 8 pm at Noble home. The notice lists marriage to Bert R Cory and a forthcoming move to northern state. Also mentions unsettled accounts from lumber business and local ads.
