Landmark Flour Mill Vanishes in Cambridge History
The aging Cambridge flour mill near the Northwestern hotel, once a landmark and symbol of local enterprise, is being torn down. Built after August 1845 by Josiah Chandler and Dr. W. H. Grafton, the mill struggled amid cheaper imports and a national financial panic, and has stood unused since the late 19th century. Dr. Grafton still carries a $1,600 loan to sustain the venture, while the frame and foundation were sold for $200 and demolition has begun.
