The Grasshopper Tax Insects Cause Crop Loss, Warn Farmers
In a warning by C E Bartholomew, the article notes insect damage to crops can reach 10 percent in normal years and 50 to 75 percent in grasshopper or drintz years. It urges fall egg destruction and soil breaking to curb locusts, detailing egg deposition habits and recommended autumn harrowing and fall plowing to prevent next season’s losses.
Locusts Threaten Farmland Loss Without Saving Efforts
The passage argues locusts can consume many times their weight in vegetation, with 50 locusts causing about 100 pounds of grass loss and stems wasted beyond consumption. Estimates suggest total crop damage per acre often reaches at least half a ton, prompting question if such losses are worth preventing.
