During the Civil War a New Hampshire colonel’s wife disappears when a river steamer sinks near Virginia. After stalled requests for leave, President Lincoln and Secretary Stanton authorize a rescue and retrieval mission, and the body of the wife is recovered. The tale honors devoted women and the mercy shown by leaders.
Miss Carrie A. Rice, daughter of Philo W. Rice of Glenbrook Tahoe, died within minutes after a plunge from Shakspeare rock during a Lake Tahoe excursion.
