Ames Growing Despite Railroad Collapse and Revival
The Ames area reflects mixed fortunes from the failed Iowa and Minnesota railroad project. While contractors deceived investors and left many unpaid, the episode spurred immigration, real estate growth, and a push toward robust education and new five union schoolhouse plans. The town incorporated as an independent school district, boasting strong schools and the Iowa State Agricultural College nearby. The Methodist church expanded from six members in 1862 to 131 in 1870, with sustained leadership and a new church building funded by donations.
