The narrator describes a tall, sun-tanned stranger who enters briskly, removes his palm-leaf hat, and cools his brow with a red handkerchief. He appears about fifty, with a bold, handsome face and a noticeable air of significance to the narrator.
A Boston magnate Pierce Rostock visiting Amos Bostock learns of the boy Dorr Jewett. Rostock offers to sponsor the youth’s education and future plantation career, then leaves a thousand dollar check with a bold farewell vow before the visit ends.
A tearful mother says, He wants you to have it, Amos, and blesses his generous heart. The father adds, Dorr, my dear boy, you can go to the academy now, signaling support for the boy's education.

Curcaco Nov. 1 Captain Hedburg of the United States Army was killed by Lieut Manning at Fort Sheridan Monday afternoon. Jealousy over Manning's attentions to Hedburg's wife was cited as the motive. The officers exchanged words, then Manning drew and fired, killing Hedburg instantly. Manning was arrested and claims self defense.
The president sent nominations to the senate naming Edwin F. Uhl of Michigan as assistant secretary of state replacing Josiah Quincy. James R. Roosevelt of New York is named secretary of embassy at London replacing Henry White. James White is a Grand Rapids lawyer and former congressman and two time mayor.
Citizens and relatives press for investigation into the death of Hannah Wetnell buried at Mason City after a Seattle death report. The orphan had lived with Mr and Mrs George Pollock and relatives urge County Attorney Hurn and Coroner Osborne to probe suspected non natural causes.
Horace Hill aged 21 has been arrested in the Anna Weiss killing case near Marshalltown. Hill denies the crime while his father E. N. Hill stands nearby. Neighbors post bond for $10,000 and release him pending the next court term.
A. Burns disappeared from O'Brien county three months ago and evidence pointed to farmer Murphy for murder. Murphy was indicted but Burns turned out to be a prisoner in Sioux City jail serving a post office robbery sentence, sent to O'Brien county to prove Murphy’s innocence and secure his release.
A woman, once left penniless when her husband Fred Bonner vanished on Christmas Day 1888, remarried a railroad worker after his presumed Colorado death. Bonner reappears later, pursuing legal action against his wife with a sworn warrant.
Chicago fighter George La Blanche known as The Marine and Des Moines boxer Billy Layton met in an improvised ring about 15 miles from Des Moines for a $500 purse. In the seventh round Layton staggered La Blanche with a neck blow, but La Blanche recovered and knocked Layton out with a right hand to the jaw.
