The noted Confederate veteran General Fitzhugh Lee died suddenly Friday from apoplexy. He was stricken on a train from Boston to Washington and lived only hours after arrival. The Nevada Journal notes lively remarks about Roosevelt inspiring Western ranchers and civic efforts to recruit a regiment in town with a meeting to be held Monday.
George Soldier the Indian held for the murder of Ma Che Sha Jr. appeared before federal authorities in Cedar Rapids but was freed due to insufficient evidence. Tribesmen withheld information, suggesting they know more but will not disclose details to outsiders.
W F Boggs of Streator Ind purchased the hardware store of Jas Jacobson here Monday. Jacobson keeps the implement department and will continue in the business. He has run the hardware shop twenty years. Boggs is described as a progressive businessman. Mrs Boggs, Emma Roberts, formerly a Story City teacher, is known to locals. Invoice takeover set for June 1 when Boggs takes possession.
John Orth of Madrid died in an April 1 avalanche near Ouray Colorado while nine miners were buried under snow. His body was found three feet from the building wall, lifeless and pinned by snow. One other miner died and the rest suffered injuries. The Boone Standard reports Nevada may raise National Guardsmen within a year as local servicemen discuss a vacancy.
Four men indicted for breaking and entering a Northwestern freight car were escorted from jail to court for arraignment. As they returned a suspect bolted toward Third Street, was pursued by Sheriff Foster and Deputy Patterson, then surrendered after a confrontation with Officer Victor Holm. Judge Richard appointed Attorney Harper to defend the prisoners.
Fourteen Richland township taxpayers file suit to block disposal of bonds and use of proceeds, challenge consolidation plans, and seek a temporary injunction granted by Judge Richards. Plaintiffs include W Callihan A J Wright Andrew B Anderson T C Thompson J M Chinaman Amand Thompson Wm Roe Thomas Mulvihill and others amid election disputes and legal questions about authority.
The Nevada Journal reports residents and property owners in remote parts of the township oppose the injunction delaying construction. No progress beyond voluntary foundation work has occurred. Superintendent Welty doubts the delay will stand, believing a sufficient showing can set aside the injunction. The school board has not yet hired an attorney but plans to soon.
