Mr. Fred R. Barkhurst leaves Story City for Stanhope to prepare his new paper The Saturday Mail with first issue set for May 12. He boasts a brand new outfit from the factory and aims for a bright, newsy, crisp publication for Stap.
J A Fitelpatrick has bought the Shirk lot north of the Chamberlin and Smith block, clearing the obstacle to filling the gap toward the National Bank. The remaining vacant lot belongs to W F Swayze, with allied interests holding both parcels. W Mead arrived from Bosua for a brief Board visit then plans a ten week return from Nebraska.
Mrs Jessie Osborn of Alhambra California visited M Hunt and family last week. Effie Knepper born Neveda Iowa January 31 1860 died April 16 1894 at 9 a m aged 34 years 7 months 16 days. She grew up in Nevada and Clyde Iowa where she met Dr N W Knepper and married in July 1879.
Att'y A. L. Bartlett and Dr. McCord of Nevada visited Maxwell Monday to see a lively town scene. Trade is dull as farmers prepare ground for the corn season. Nevada township residents have been seen here, likely contributing to the slowdown. Miss Watts and Miss Pope, Ames teachers, were guests of Miss Laughery. Miss Cora Hibbard of Algona, visiting Mrs. Hattie Wardell, attended Ames school events over the weekend.
Fred Wollheter is advancing the framework of his new residence and aims for a rapid completion. Geo B Roberts is making steady progress on his new meat market and hopes to open soon with full stock. Miss Myrtle Golly begins a term of school in the Watkins district west of town and is expected to satisfy patrons with good teaching. An earlier item misstated J A Page’s candidacy, correcting that he is a candidate for county recorder, not county auditor.
Community discussion on reorganizing the Good Templars with expectations of good results. Nevada visitor William Cook, formerly of Battle Creek Michigan, was warmly greeted by old friends. No petition for a new license has begun in Story county. I O O F in this city marked seventy fifth anniversary with speeches at the temple.
Miss Clarice McCarthy now pursuing post graduate studies at Agricultural College spent Sunday evening and Monday with Nevada friends and sang at Unitarian services. California excursionists including C A Wood and wife and others returned home Saturday night. Rev Jas Millen of the Metcalf Theological seminary preached at the Presbyterian church and has been invited to preach again next year.
J A McKee drove to Ames Wednesday. Emmett Compton tuned pianos in town Monday and Tuesday. Mesdames Cora Shockley and A J Hawley visited Lizzie Whitmer and Alma Green from Ames. Citizens Bank officers appointed after May 1 include R S Silliman president H N Silliman vice president and E R Silliman cashier. Lewis Larson broke both bones in an arm Friday when a barn door slammed shut. Capt K W Brown traveled to Ames and spoke on the prohibition platform at Odd Fellows hall Monday evening.
