Reminiscences of Boston Post Office Change Over Time
Charles Brigham recalls 1888 era when mail from steamers arrived on wheelbarrows and was dumped unsorted. Clerks worked 20 hours daily on $300 yearly. The Boston office grew from 15 workers to a large modern operation with 169 central and 345 suburban carriers. The cornerstone of the present building was laid in 1871 with President Grant at the ceremony.
