Franchises and Salary Reforms Tied to City Rail Plan

The Ames city council voted to adopt an ordinance allowing Interurban Railway use of Onondaga street through the business district with a final decision by a citywide vote on April 8, 1907. The measure also retracts Story street usage and fixes a twenty five year contract. A March 1 salary act raises clerks and letter carriers’ pay across city offices with six grades topping at 1200 dollars. The rail line must be completed by July 1, 1907 unless weather delays extend the period. If approved, construction will proceed toward Duff and Kellogg with protections for the city.
