Mark Malone's daring night ride to join Union lines
Mark Malone escapes Confederate pursuers at night after stealing a horse from Slack. He flees across streams and mountains toward Union camps, engages and kills a Confederate rider, and makes it to Altamont and McMinnville where he is received by General Thomas. He learns Laura is safe, reunites with his wife, and is offered a staff appointment, while his secret service career ends as she objects to further danger.
