In Nevada City California on July 28 the bodies of Sheriff David Douglas and an unknown highwayman were found side by side in nearby woods two miles from town. The sheriff was shot through the heart while five bullets pierced the robber. The robber's rifle showed no sign of use. Authorities suspect confederates of the highwayman were behind the slayings after a spree of robberies in the area. The sheriff had pursued the outlaw alone after planning to rely on a larger posse.
