U.S. Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver visited the college on Thursday and spoke to a packed special chapel. He mixed humor with a serious message about Iowa's social progress and the restoration of the old farm home, drawing a marked reaction from the crowd.
Judge Lee wraps Nevada docket after Mrs. Latham’s death alters the case. Next term in Boone County starts Monday with court in Story County led by Judge Evans on March 18. A treasury clerk story and Senator Dolliver anecdotes follow with local civic notes and campus visits.
The senior and junior classes hold Friday debates on timely topics with John Gardner as president and Paul Williams as secretary. They voted against penny postage and names for next session include Elmer Greenlee Merl Manning as affirmatives and Roy Brown Orville Ufford as negatives.

Dr. A. P. Cobb, who has led gospel meetings at the Church of Christ for three weeks, will speak next Monday on Heroes and Heroism. A former Chautauqua lecturer and platform manager at Pontiac, he is expected to draw a packed Ames audience. admission is 25 cents.
At 3 AM Monday, Ames citizens witnessed a fire at the C N W interlocking switch block house. Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze with minimal traffic disruption. Northwest Railway faces under $59 loss. Mayor Sheldon praised the crew, then treated them to coffee. Local wit Jae Haggatt joked about banking the tower before winter.

Sammy and Miller began a discount sale Monday to clear stock before moving mid February to the Duntz cart penter shop at Kellogg and Story opposite city hall. They will overhaul the building for a roomy harness shop, making space for Geo. E. Baker to expand his jewelry store with a brick two story building. Let Ames need numerous new buildings.

The C N W R Co expresses thanks to Ames fire department for assisting in extinguishing a fire at the interlocking plant last night. Superintendent W H Whalen says he will inform company management of the department's actions.
The Ames fire company orders 1000 feet of hose eight to ten rubber coats and hats two white coats for Chief Roper and Foreman Cupps to be used in emergencies. The plan includes hiring a team of horses to spray Main Street and business districts and a fire wagon may be built later. The upgrade aims to improve promptness and health during fires as village protection increases.
Plastering on the college Y M C A building is underway and expected to finish in about eight weeks. Workers have progressed steadily and officials anticipate occupancy near the start of next term with intensive use beginning in September.

The birthday of General James Rush Lincoln of Iowa State College is noted next Sunday. Lincoln was selected as Professor of Military Science in 1884 and has led Ames military affairs since then. His family has a long line of soldiers with service in the Revolution War, War of 1812, Mexican War, and the Civil War era. He commanded in the Spanish American War after appointment by President McKinley. Lincoln came to Boonesboro in 1867 and moved to Ames in 1884.
Reverend A P Cobb endorses Judge Lindsay of Denver and Rev Dr E L Eaton as top speakers for Ames Chautauqua next year. Cobb cites Lindsay as a popular Colorado bench figure and Eaton as a renowned philosophical lecturer with broad eastern experience. He notes Eaton may bring a telescope and praises both men as strong talent for the circuit.
A birthday party at Odd Fellows Hall celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Amon Hipshire as they marked eighty eight years and sixty years of marriage. Local officials Mayor Sheldon M K Smith Geo W OBrien and Frank Curtiss attended. The event featured donated music services from City band violin and cello players and a long communal dinner. Parley Sheldon spoke praising pioneers and their courage while a note from S P O’Brien was read. Residents recalled old days in Iowa and Story County with pride.
Property owners with sewer assessments payable for the 1906 line have two weeks left to settle or sign waivers. Of 19200 total, 8000 paid, 6000 waived, leaving about 4000 due to enter tax list unless waived now. An accident at the city electric light plant left Jim Johnson with multiple broken bones after a two hundred pound anvil crushed his foot. He is confined to bed for several days.
A major blaze leveled the Butler hotel at Boone on Monday night causing an estimated 50 000 in losses with 15 000 covered by insurance. The fire began in the basement and the show troupe behind A Stranger in Town reported many belongings lost.
The Ames bowling squad for the State Tournament is set with seven players led by captain C. H. Miers. Members include J. B. Kintzley G. E. Palmer K. K. Frazier J. W. Rader and two two man teams including Kintzley and Rader. John Kintzley accompanies the group. Nevada girls edged Boone girls 11 to 1 in a seven side basketball game.
Tom Thompson of Algona reports little snow in Kossuth County while Colfax resident Frank Robinson notes heavy snowfall there. He recalls Sunday night when snow halted transport, with back lines tied and Interurban cars abandoned. Steam trains ran late and snow plows were in near constant use.
The city council will soon consider condemning a mile or two of rickety board sidewalks and order permanent walks. If property owners refuse to comply the city may lay brick walks. The city is liable for damages from defective sidewalks, so the law authorizes remedies.
