On January 17 the Attorney General announced abandoning the 19th count and the evicted tenants evidence was ruled inadmissible. Mc Laughlin, retained for the defense, closed the case amid protests from landlords who denied distress. He was loudly applauded at the end. The 20th segment references L P Dillon of counsel.
The annual session of the State Temperance Alliance opened in Des Moines on January 18. Dr. James Wright resigned as Secretary. Mrs. M. F. G. Pitman was elected to fill the vacancy. The committee urged active club organization for Prohibition amendment and participation in primary meetings. Officers include President H. W. Maxwell, Secretary Pitman, Treasurer Samuel Greene, with a statewide board of directors and various district vice presidents. The Iowa State Millers Association met in Des Moines January 19 with President Snouffer presiding. Officers re-elected include J J Snouffer as President and J B Jones as Vice President. The group discussed fishway law modifications and planned a March 1 meeting in Des Moines to coordinate actions with mill dam owners. The meeting also noted strong Iowa exhibit efforts in Cincinnati.
