Cyrus David Foss born January 17 1834 in Kingston New York to a traveling Methodist preacher. He graduated Wesleyan University in 1854, taught, then joined the ministry in 1857 with early posts in Chester Orange County and Brooklyn. He later led Wesleyan University before becoming a bishop in 1869 and made his residence in Minneapolis.
