Iowa Legislature Debates Tax Reform and Redistricting Plans
Des Moines February reports show Iowa lawmakers intensively debating tax reform measures, including curbing tax ferrets and new assessment rules. Also discussed are state depository banks, mine safety reforms, hospital funding, school text book policies, and land title registration.
Directors Meet in Des Moines Elects Assistant Secretary
At a Des Moines meeting of state agriculture directors C A Rilyea of Storm Lake was elected assistant secretary. Plans for a $1200 addition to horticultural hall were submitted, cattle premiums raised by $80, and an extra class added to horse events. Speed department funds rose from 7500 to 8000, and August 26 was set as soldiers free day at the fair. Plans for a streetcar line to the fair grounds were approved, and talks on a $75,000 to $100,000 two-structure improvement were considered. A coal under the fair grounds was studied but deemed unprofitable to mine, and no steps will be taken to lease coal rights. Legislative asks may seek $30,000 to $35,000 for a permanent stock pavilion. Public notices included a proposed Sunday baseball football ban by Rep Nagle of Van Buren county.
