Iowa lawmakers finalize assembly and school book debate
Des Moines, February 1 1888 The Journal Intelligencer reports lawmakers have finished electing the U S senator and set to work. House committees are large with up to eighteen members while Retrenchment and Reform handles many patronage resolutions. Bills on school books facing strong opposition seek state contracts or price lists and even free textbooks by district vote. Hedge fences along highways are proposed, and Curtis's temperance measure would gate liquor sales by county appointees.

Christmas Dinner That Led to Stone River Deaths
A Christmas 1862 dinner hosted by Col. G W Roberts of the Forty second Illinois foreshadowed the battle at Murfreesboro. Roberts, Harrington, and Talliaferro toasted victory before dying on Stone River a week later. The Stone River fight raged Dec 31 to Jan 3 with Grant’s Union forces, Sheridan and Davis facing Bragg. Roberts commanded Sheridans left brigade and was killed amid heavy combat as the Confederates pressed three sides of a square. Stone River Battle Report Shows Union Victory Gains
Gen Bragg opened fire at daylight on the Federal center and at McCook's right as he sought signs of a retreat. Van Cleve's division moved to enfilade Polk. Breckinridge and his brigades attacked, then fell back after Miller crossed the river and pressed the assault. Rosecrans crossed Critttenden's corps, while Bragg began to withdraw toward the south. By Jan 5 Thomas entered Murfreesboro and Confederate losses rose with many brigade leaders killed. The clash left Nashville and Kentucky unsettled, marking a major Union victory in the Stone River fight.
