It also reports on newspaper changes in Zearing, Des Moines fire damage, Primghar Sheldon county-seat wrangles, and local notes from various towns.
In early November Tom Hilton, a leading Iowa trapper, pitched tents three miles southwest of Madrid on the Des Moines river and began trapping with A P Cronk and Louis Leland aiding. Editor S O Spence visited on the 12th for a seven day catch that included one coon three possums eleven skunks two minks two civets and sixty seven muskrats plus a possum alive. Hilton moved to Skunk river at Cambridge on the 18th and planned a move to southern Minnesota seeking better game.
The Webster City Tribune warns that letters from a Washington firm target Civil War veterans with homestead land claims. The inquiries urge secrecy about existing claims and hint at selling rights to defraud the government, risking criminal exposure while the firm profits. Also noted: Walter Riddle indicted for bootlegging and detained in Des Moines awaiting January district court.
