Fire destroys Main College building and forces rebuild doubt
A Saturday morning blaze gutted the north wing and much of the middle section of the Main college building. The board of trustees will not rebuild, while faculty and students organized to continue term work. The fire started in the boiler room and spread rapidly due to hidden passages and strong winds. The loss included the building, botanical collections, duplicate specimens, and much of the private library, with about thirty students losing most possessions.
