Ottumwa August 22 The Wapello county fair opens. Races promise to be the best in the association’s history with 200 entries already made, about double prior years.
The Non pareil Printing and Publishing company, publisher of The Daily Non pareil for 80 years, has been placed under receivership. The paper claims the title of the oldest in the state.
Several thousand people attended the reunion of old settlers in Iowa City. Judge Samuel H. Fairall delivered the address of the day. Of the pioneers who came to the county before 1840 only 10 are living, and nearly all were present.
Mrs. Susan Ann Byrne died in Dvsvere. She was the daughter of Thomas McCraney who originally owned a large portion of the city and was born January 10, 183%, six months before the government took possession in the Black Hawk purchase.

Cepar Raps Aug 20 The Good News car carrying Evangelist E F Goff and wife John Philip Quinn and wife Assistant Superintendent E B Stevenson Ward Goff and Miss McCrond arrived in town. Two large meetings were held in Riverside park drawing thousands to the gatherings.
The 18th annual encampment of the Sons of Veterans began in Davidport Iowa on Monday with 300 delegates present. Reports from Commander-in-Chief McCabe of Boston and Quartermaster General Loebenstein of Chicago said the order is in good condition with improved finances but fewer members in good standing.
Mayor Fletcher declares he will not permit the Corbett Jackson bout within Sioux City or on Iowa soil. He says he will unalterably oppose bringing the battle to the city and doubts it will be allowed locally.

Omaha August 18 Over 2000 men have been discharged from the Union Pacific due to the great strike with more replacements daily. About 50 engineers and firemen are included. some with the company for 70 years. They say they were misled by the A R U and regret striking, though few engines were disabled on Wyoming and Idaho lines.
Freight train No 4 on the Wabash struck a horse west of Jonesburg at midnight causing the locomotive and 19 cars to derail. Engineer C Felton of Moberly Mo and three tramps died. Several workers and others injured including Fireman Tilton and brakeman Fam Franks with arm and head injuries.
Four years after the murder of John S Frazer a prominent cattle dealer in Kansas, authorities report the capture of the alleged killers. The suspects are listed as Theodore F Cox Mark McBee William Licklister and John R and Elmer Cox, all prominent local farmers or businessmen. The arrest has caused a statewide sensation in Sedan and nearby areas.
