In fifteenth century Naples Signor Ambrose, a botanist, and his daughter Caterina inspire rival suitors Caracciola and Andrea. Andrea fakes death to escape, retreats to Palermo, then returns to Naples via disguise. After Caracciola is freed from prison, Andrea reveals himself and wins Caterina by a serenade, forgiving his foe in a single day.
