Five people died when two cars collided near Liberal Kansas as a lone survivor, Barbara Bivans, 17, remained in serious but improving condition at Southwest Medical Center. Victims were Raymond A. Boles 58 his wife Vernetta 56 their daughter Shirley 16 Freda R. Jones 16 and Larry Hall 19 all from rural Liberal. Ball the other driver from Plains Texas was returning from Denver. Funeral plans for the Boles family and Ball are pending. Miss Jones funeral set for Monday at First Assembly of God Church with burial in Liberal Cemetery.

John R. Rarick defeated 12-term incumbent James H. Morrison in the Louisiana 6th District Democratic runoff. With 328 of 329 precincts reporting, Rarick had 85,242 votes to Morrison's 80,785, led by East Baton Rouge Parish where the state capital lies.
A Sandy haired high school student, Melvin Stewart Pittman, faced three murder charges after police say he ambushed a couple and killed a third person near Lake Arlington. Pittman guided officers to the victims, saying he did not know why he acted. The Lairds had been missing since Sept. 1.
