Hereford police report six Latin American youths faced burglary charges after arrests by the Deaf Smith County sheriff. The arrests followed a burglary wave and a crackdown to day.
Police uncovered art treasures valued over a million dollars hidden in a Paris attic after a repairman spotted an expensive painting in an apartment described as Ali Baba's Cave. Thirty paintings, jewels, furs, silver, fine china, and rare books were seized, with 100 franc notes found between pages. Yugoslav occupant Nicholas Franusic, 30, admitted to multiple burglaries in the Paris area while working as a decorator. A cupboard nearby held more loot, including impressionist paintings later linked to last September’s theft from Carlos Aramago, former Bolivian ambassador, insured for a million. Police cleared Franusic's girlfriend of involvement. she received a few trinkets.
In Plainview a tear gas bomb stored in a safe at Cooper Pontiac Cadillac Ltd. exploded as police dusted for fingerprints. Burglars pried open the safe and stole more than 300 dollars. Officers retreated as fumes filled the room before resumed investigation.
