Scout Killed In Camp Fall
A 13 year old Amarillo Boy Scout died Saturday afternoon after falling 65 feet from a cottonwood tree at Camp Don Harrington 10 miles south of Amarillo. Joe Edward Smitherman, son of Mr and Mrs M F Smitherman of 3501 Nebraska, struck a concrete slab and died almost instantly during a one day troop outing. Randall County deputies noted he lost balance on a limb while others from Troop 76 of St Paul Methodist Church were nearby. The camp manager called it the first serious accident in 18 years of operation.
