President Truman signs a bill to pressure government trained medical personnel to volunteer or be drafted as privates if under 51 and not in reserves. The plan targets about 5,600 doctors and 3,000 dentists with mixed prior service, to serve under government expense.
President Truman creates a new Economic Stabilization Agency and assigns Symington to oversee policy coordination as he warns Americans of sacrifices to curb inflation. He orders price and wage controls and a pay-as-you-go mobilization, with tax hikes and stricter production targets to sustain a 30 billion dollar annual defense drive.
Assistant Secretary of State Dean Rusk calls for moving toward a Japanese peace settlement and granting full international privileges to Japan. He outlines an 11 point Far East policy, defends continued aid to Formosa defenses, and asks veterans to back President Truman, stressing peace, liberty, and living standards improvements.
The Exl Hawkins Post No. 187 American Legion in Petersburg learns it will receive a 57 mm anti tank gun from Red River Arsenal as a government donation. Upon arrival the weapon will be installed in front of the Legion Hall.

The Tri-State Fair Queen contest in Amarillo seeks a young woman aged 18 to 25 who embodies charm style and education. Candidates will be judged 40 percent on charm 40 percent on style and 0 percent on culture with interviews and informal attire, next Friday in the Crystal Ball room at the Herring Hotel. Miss Jewell Holt a 21 year old nurse from Texhoma is among the first entries and potential Kansas City trip awaits the winner.
Korean Communists pressed the northern front as American and South Korean forces closed a 5 mile gap near Taegu. Taegu remained relatively quiet though the Reds continued hammering at ridge positions 7 miles above the city. Air support operated under light overcast as forces moved to Kyongju and Yongchon while battles at Masan and Batte Mountain shaped the southern front.
Pte. Daniel Florey of the US Marine Corps is the first Gray County man killed in action in Korea. He was 20, killed September 3 and reported to his parents in McLean by telegram from the Navy Depart ment. He served since 1948 and had just received his high school diploma in June 1949 after returning to McLean. Survivors include two sisters, Geraldine Florey of McLean and Mrs. J A Walston of Bandera.
Cecil Griffin, a Childress County farmer, was stung by a twin motor yellowjack at Childress Airfield. He fainted, was treated, and later moved home where he remained unconscious for hours before doctors said he was on the road to recovery.
In New Cumnock Scotland on September 9, more than half of 118 trapped Scottish miners escaped a 720 foot coal pit after two days underground. Rescue continued for the rest amid poisonous gas, with ten unaccounted and eight others reaching safety.
