Miners Trapped as Cave-In Injures Five in Murphy NC
Five of 340 foot Hitch two shaft miners were injured when timbers failed trapping men two hours after the cave in near Murphy North Carolina. Two men were missing and believed trapped while three others escaped or were brought to surface. Rescuers pumped oxygen into the shaft and hospital reports listed injuries ranging from minor to critical.

He spoke of his weight dropping from 125 to 108 pounds while in a POW camp and said he had tried to escape since 1956. He called the move a foolish mistake and said he hopes to visit his mother in Tucson before settling on the west coast for better weather. He carried about $300 and did not say how he would return home.

Two Dead in Canyon Highway Crash Near US 87
A rear end collision on US Highway 87 two miles north of Canyon left two adults dead and a 1 ½ year old girl injured. The child was treated at Neblett Hospital and Amarillo Air Force Base Hospital before transfer. The truck driver J. W. Meadows of Muleshoe was not hurt. The bodies were taken to La Grone Funeral Home with services pending.
