Geneva September 7 a league sub committee of five nations appealed to Italy and Ethiopia to refrain from force as it seeks a peaceful solution. The small body plans continued conciliation efforts despite limited progress toward an Italo Ethiopian settlement.
New York September 7 Wall Street ends the first week of September with industrial averages at their highest since 1931. Optimism grows over a autumn business recovery after President Roosevelt promises a breathing spell for industry. Many leading issues gain from $1 to $5 while volume remains heavy and transfers exceed a million shares during the session.
Forecast calls for Sunday showers in north and east portions with cooler air in the Panhandle. West Texas unsettled with showers locally, New Mexico cooler Sunday, with a generally unsettled week ahead. Temperatures near or below normal across the Southern Plains and West Gulf States.
FAIRBANKS Alaska Sept 77 three men Percy Hubbard his brother Russell and A J Douglas escaped death after their plane nearly crashed while seeking clues to the disappearance of pilot Al Hines and three passengers They suffered injuries including cracked ribs a broken arm and severe burns Their survival was described as lucky by Russell Hubbard Prospector reports suggest a plane seen hanging in trees at the Tanana head but the search for Hines and the others continues with several parties involved in the remote Chena River area
HOUSTON Sept. 7 Dave Nelson of Orange, chair man of the State Livestock Sanitary Commission, was named manager of the prison system to succeed Lee Simmons, effective November 1. The Texas Prison Board voted 7 to 2 to accept Simmons resignation, with Nelson chosen as his successor. Simmons resigned to resume farm holdings in Grayson County amid board and legislative opposition to his policies. The board said Simmons would not reconsider his resignation as general manager and acted to appoint Nelson promptly.
Friends of Garland Woodward an attorney from Big Spring urged his candidacy to succeed the late State Senator Arthur P. Duggan if a special election is called by the governor. He is brother of former State Senator Walter Woodward and had not indicated his candidacy.
Baton Rouge reports Sen Huey P Long laid a sweeping bill in special session to jail federal officials for work in Louisiana and vows to bring suit in the U S Supreme Court to curb federal agencies. An incident in the House saw T O Harris removed after a clash with Long allies. In Sverdlovsk a new rail car plant at Tangui will produce 115,200 cars yearly by year end.
Former U S ambassador James W Gerard called Countess Barbara Hutton Hatugwitz Revention the most influential person in America noting she spurred wealth tax sentiment. He credited Gene Howe for the label and urged a France for teeth motto amid a dental clinic venture.
Florida authorities ordered cremation of about 110 storm dead amid a pestilence risk after the September hurricane. Funeral pyres burned near Snake Creek and Camp Three as 500 workers moved through devastated areas. Memorial services were set for Bayfront Park in Miami at 7 PM.

Maryland flood breached several small dams at Powellville Fook's Mills and Morris' Mills flooding nearby towns and highways. Workmen raced to build sandbag dikes to protect Leon ards Mill Barren Creek Mill and Tony Tank Lake Dams as Roads Engineer P A Morrison reported. The Mannatakket steamer burned at Hicks wharf in Mathews County no injuries reported.
Ravenwood Missouri on September 7 reports a humorous picnic scene where a diaper derby was planned as a feature. The master of ceremonies urged men to participate, citing a past winner’s laurels, but his exhortations fell flat amid a chaotic crowd.
Plans for highway projects in 10 Panhandle counties seek about 1 million dollars in WPA and PWA funds over one year to employ 1344 men. W J Van London submitted the proposals to Alston Meredith who approved them and sent them to the San Antonio state office. Projects include 1.61 miles of grading and paving on Highway 5 in Potter County and 35 miles of reconstruction on Highway 5 north of the city, with costs of 17 901.25 and 33 831.56 respectively, plus two Randall County and two Lipscomb County jobs involving reshaping bases, widening concrete paving, and surfacing.
Coast guard rescue followed a distress call from the battered schooner Seth Parker, 625 miles southeast of Honolulu. The vessel, once linked to Philips Lord, was leaking badly with pumps down, three feet of water in the hold, and 15 crewmen without food as a rescue boat pursued.
Gulfport city police booked Louis Boudreaux alias George Burke a case worker for arrest in a criminal attack on a 1 year old girl Lillian Stiglers. He was moved to Hinds County jail in Jackson to prevent violence after a crowd gathered and murmurs of violence. City Patrolmen John A Payne and William A Turner arrested Burke quietly before the rush to Jackson.
A deadlocked jury caused a mistrial in the trial of C. D. Dean, charged with killing neighbor Morern near Uvalde. Dean had pleaded self defense as the proceedings ended.
The German government protested to Secretary Hull over Magistrate Broadsky's dismissal of five men charged with unlawful assembly after the Bremen flag episode in New York. Ambassador Luther delivered the protest. Hull promised a full report from Governor Lehman for study. New York dispatches on the release followed other afternoon news.
Ida B Wise Smith, national president of the W C T U, told 1000 delegates at the union’s 61st annual convention that the average American family spent 97.29 on legal liquor in the last two years. She estimated the 1934 nation’s drink bill at 3 billion dollars and government revenue at 14.97 per family.
Col Charles A Lindbergh was at the summer home of Mrs Dwight W Morrow mother of Mrs Lindbergh at North Haven Maine. He arrived yesterday after a flight through the West with Mrs Lindbergh and the family kept quiet about his plan. A later note confirms his arrival today. Also Houston reports a Bohemian man, Jor Kubena, 52, convicted of murdering his wife Mary, 50, and sentenced to life imprisonment by a state district court jury for the June 27 slaying.
Americans prepare to aid destitute neighbors through the Community Chest. With federal direct relief ending November 1, local agencies will absorb those dropped from relief, raising the need to a higher level. The goal is set at $74,000 and an intensive campaign will be conducted.
