Governor Ross Sterling announces a farmers session of the Texas Legislature to enact emergency laws to reduce cotton acreage and conserve soil amid a deep agricultural crisis. He cites widespread distress, low prices, overproduction, and soil deterioration as reasons for relief measures.
Clarence Pryor faces trial in the 31st district court for the July shooting of his father in law Dr. W. W. Guyton 82 at a Shamrock filling station. Guyton's daughter had sued Pryor for divorce days earlier. Pryor testified the doctor reached for a gun.
Sunday partly cloudy and warm across Amarillo and West Texas. New Mexico mainly fair with little temperature change. Precipitation for the last 24 hours ended yesterday evening was 0 inches.
Bitter controversy at White Deer 45 miles northeast of Amarillo splits into two factions. State superintendent S M N Marrs listened as J H Skaggs led a White Deer school board delegation and Kuykendall supporters spoke. Both sides cited alleged negligence and other grievances while noting conferences were unofficial and no action could be taken.
Enrollment will be completed in Amarillo schools Monday for all students who did not classify last week. All elementary students report at 8:30 to be assigned to rooms and receive books, while junior and senior high classifications continue through the day. Regular classes start Tuesday. students should bring last year’s report cards and book cards. New pupils need a smallpox vaccination certificate or affidavit.
Weather forecasts from the U S Weather Bureau and Panhandle Auto Club predict good road and travel conditions for Labor Day. Partly cloudy today with no rain. Amarillo detours exist but roads are in good shape. Saturday temperatures peaked at 97 with a low of 68, and readings should ease Sunday before climbing back to the upper 90s Monday.
Robbers took a heavy safe from 401 North Hayes Street late Friday, slipping it through the front door after entering via a bathroom window. The loot included $800 in currency, about $300 in old gold coins, a Columbia Exposition half-dollar, and valuable papers. Mr. Dickey is a Rock Island passenger conductor who left for Sayre, Oklahoma.
Sir Hubert Wilkins reported by radio from Oslo that the polar submarine Nautilus was damaged in a dive beneath the ice pack but the damage is not serious.
Melva Milam 22 of Portales New Mexico died when a truck dragged him 20 feet after a failed attempt to board east of Lubbock. The rear dual wheels passed over his body as he waved for a ride. Driver J R Phillips Amarillo not deemed at fault by investigators.
Francis Ouimet, 38, defeats Alfred Westland 6 and 5 at Beverly Country Club Chicago to reclaim the US Amateur championship he last won in 1914. The win places Ouimet on the pedestal once more as golf history notes a national triumph amid youthful field strength.
Floydada resident E. B. Mayhew, missing since Wednesday after a letter about his body, was found alive Friday at White Flats north of Paducah and returned home. Relatives decline to discuss the case as a wide search had shifted to a man hunt.
Major Jimmy Doolittle set a 272.934 mph speed trial at the national air races as Lowell Bayles planned a faster attempt for the world's landplane speed record. Women pilots also targeted Ruth Nichols's 210 mph female record.
Amarillo Chamber of Commerce invites state officials to a noon barbecue at the Goodnight ranch to discuss state purchase of the remaining 245 buffaloes. The legislature authorized a take over only if a suitable buffalo range is provided, with plans to turn the ranch into a state preserve. Newsreel cameras will film tomorrow’s events as officials weigh a sanctuary for the herd.
Governor Seligman trims waste and adopts business practices to cut state costs. He axed $25 000 yearly in salaries on day one and pushes competitive bidding through a purchasing board. Highway fuel use shrinks by about 3 cents a gallon saving $45 000. He keeps his campaign platform on his desk and demands formal pardons with proper recommendations.
The Potter County Federation of Women's Clubs voted to give up the Municipal Auditorium club rooms for Amarillo College. A ten member committee was formed to coordinate moving furniture and finding new rooms with the school board. Mayor Thompson offered use of the Crystal Ballroom at the Herring Hotel indefinitely, with furniture moved to the hotel mezzanine. Attending were Mayor Thompson, G. G. Ordway, B. E. Masters, and James O. Gulerie.
Amarillo College will begin matriculation tomorrow and run through Tuesday under President B E Masters. Catalogs from major colleges will be available during classification for course selection. A new class English history for pre law students is added this year replacing the regular freshman history.
Dublin resident Travis Boggs aged 36 and Virgil Pylant of Stephenville died when their plane crashed five miles north of Stephenville and exploded into flames.
Two head on collisions on the South Plains left three dead and six injured. At Happy two died and four were hurt when two cars collided in a dust cloud. Victims include Elizabeth Sims 78 and Milton Markham 21. A second crash west of Floydada killed Jim Hickerson 20 and seriously injured Elsie Hyats 15 who is believed dying.
Tri State Fair officials shift all business to the fair grounds beginning Monday. The office, moved there Saturday, opens at 7 30 a m and stays open until 10 p m. Secretary O L Taylor will assist concession space seekers for the September 21 to 26 event.
