Herbert J. Teater, 41, jailed for grand larceny, begins his sixteenth day of hunger strike in Los Angeles. He has lost about 40 pounds, from 211 to just over 170, and says he would rather die than eat. New York officers plan to return him to Manhattan to plead guilty.
L G Phares, chief of the Texas Highway Patrol, was named acting director of the Texas Department of Public Safety. He will lead the new modernized police system while remaining highway patrol chief and assist the Public Safety Commission in organizing the merged department.
Avie Bartholmey, 31, sat sobbing in a jail cell and confessed to drowning her two children, James and Carol, saying she could never be a good mother. She awaited removal to Winnebago Hospital for mental observation after wading into the Fox River and holding her children under water.

Hudgins died five hours after the crash. He was the son of Mrs. Frank Hudgins, with five sisters and two brothers surviving.
Cecil Allen who died at the Bendix Air Race in Los Angeles will be buried beside his father in Loma Vista. Services are set for 2 P M Monday at the Methodist Church in the town.
Detective Captain Will Fritz said a slender chestnut haired youth, 24, with a burglary record, is held in Dallas jail as a suspect in the May disappearance of four tourists in New Mexico. Readied details point to a possible link to the case and the inquiry continues.
Mrs Harold Ickes wife of the secretary of interior died in a motor car collision 30 miles north of Santa Fe New Mexico. Mrs Genevieve Forbes Herrick writer was injured critically and two others were in critical condition. The car was struck by a hit and run driver and the group were en route to the Santa Fe fiesta.
Indictments in federal court name Joseph Mendelson Leonard Sutttern John Burke and Joseph Sherman along with Burke's Chicago firm the John J Burke Company. Case alleges manipulation of Stutz stock netting about 350000 in profits.
In Grand Junction Colorado a Denver and Rio Grande Western freight train derailed after striking a dirt slide near Palisade. Locomotive fireman C N Butler was killed, other crew members escaped.

RIDE SPECIAL CARS GENERAL STEELE, HOUSTON, WILL PRESIDE OVER BRIEF SESSIONS Amarillo hosts the 51st Texas Division United Confederate Veterans reunion and the 43rd annual Sons of Confederate Veterans convention. The event runs through Friday aligning with the 45th national UCV and 40th national SCV meetings. Gen A L Steele of Houston heads the veterans. Judge John G Wilson of Dallas leads the Sons. Headquarters are at the Herring Hotel as delegates begin arriving.
Austin reports Texas closed its fiscal year with an 11,208,065.56 deficit in general revenue and Confederate pension funds. The general fund deficit rose to 6,366,294 versus 5,824,042 the prior year, with a warrant call of 702,168 through April 20, 1935. Pension fund deficit stands at 4,841,772.
Major Edmond R. Wiles of Fort Riley appealed in Amarillo for West Texas cowmen to donate beeves to feed Confederate veterans during their 45th reunion. He expects 25 000 meals at 15 cents each and will send trucks for donated meat. contact Amarillo Hotel or phone 9648.
Veterans of the Civil War face a final reunion here September 3 to 6 as eyesight fades and travel becomes difficult. Of the original four-year conflict survivors, not more than 7 000 remain and death thins the ranks by about 20 percent yearly. About 1 000 veterans are expected at the 45th United Confederate Veterans gathering and 36th Confederate Southern Memorial Association meeting. Leaders who fought under Lee Jackson and Forrest will decide whether to meet with Union forces again, a gesture extended by the G A R. Most veterans are near 90 and this may be their last reunion. Governors Allred and Tingley will greet them, and the Marine Band will provide tunes as they parade in a grand ball offering dance partners later.Continued on Page 2, Col 5.

Heavy rains washed out trail crossings at Palo Duro State Park marooning two picnic parties in canyon camps for days. More than 100 men and women were arrested in Chicago's Negro district as police broke up a protest parade against Italy's threatened invasion of Ethiopia. Police towed 12 patrol wagons loaded with prisoners to a station after Commissioner James P. Allman refused a permit to the Joint Conference for Defense of Ethiopia.
Annette and Yvonne, two of the Dionne quintuplets, walked unaided for about four steps each in Callander Ontario on August 31. Dr Allan Roy Dafoe said Cecile, Mille and Maria should soon repeat the effort.
