Plains bankers to host Litton chief Charles Thornton

Charles Bates Thornton chief executive of Litton Industries will address about 1 000 Panhandle Bankers Association members and guests at the Herring Hotel. Thornton born in Knox County rose to head Litton in 1961 after guiding its rapid growth. He has held multiple corporate and defense advisory roles and was an early leader at Hughes Aircraft.

Police Arrest 99 In Selma Friendship Day Event

Police arrested 99 demonstrators Saturday during Selma Friendship Day as a two block march to the city jail drew more than 2,000 people. Police said 35 juveniles and 50 adults faced charges of boycotting or disorderly conduct as crowds carried picket signs outside stores.
