The Air Force will begin early next year flight tests of the X-1A tiny rocket plane designed for a top speed of 1,700 mph. Built by Bell Aircraft, it follows the X-1, tested at Muroc California, seeking insights into specific aspects of supersonic flight.
Sheriff deputies detained Rudolph Holden 28 a federal parolee from Lubbock and Robert H Chambers 22 an Amarillo ex convict on Friday night in front of a tourist court. Leon Schuessler 19 Amarillo faced weapon charges and along with Holden and Chambers admitted Amarillo as a burglary base extending to Decatur.
Chilly weather kept Memorial Day outings to a minimum but highway fatalities rose nationwide. Since 6 PM Friday 69 deaths occurred including 55 traffic deaths, six drownings and eight miscellaneous deaths. The National Safety Council forecast 290 highway deaths by Tuesday midnight amid heavy expected traffic.
Authorities describe Chambers and Holden as admitting burglaries in Lubbock Decatur and Haskell. They allegedly stole a 1939 Ford from 804 North Buchanan and later took a 1950 Buick and tools from Scoggin-Dickey Buick Co. Lubbock officers found an arsenal at the tourist court room they occupied.

Kirby Lee Harris age 46 died on the Phillips golf course Borger after a fine approach to the No. 9 green in tournament play. He collapsed moments later as friends congratulated him. physicians cited a heart attack. Harris lived in Borger over 10 years and worked as a welder. Funeral at Blackburn-Shaw Brown Chapel Monday at 2 pm with burial in Highland Park Cemetery. Mrs Sylvia Harris, widow, and a son Jimmie Lee survive, along with a stepson Allen Ross and relatives in Oklahoma and Tulsa.
Harvest Queen Mills officials led by president Harold Hinn revealed a 13 million bushels storage expansion, plus doubling authorized capital stock to 2.5 million dollars. The plan includes steel tank storage at Kingsmill and Mexia, upgrades with aerating systems, and a 50 year corporate span after June 5, 1951.
Memorial Park dedication and parade highlight Memorial Day in Amarillo with city and state offices and banks closed. Gold Star Mothers will be honored in ceremonies at Memorial Park starting 9:45 AM, with dedications from 10 15 to 11. Dumas Perryton Dalhart Stratford and Spearman logged up to .75 inches of rain with hail and outages.
Mrs J S Bush of 2007 Tyler won the Loewenstern Trophy in Amarillo Roses Society third annual show for the most blue ribbons and best rose Peace Rose earning 95 points.Other winners included Mrs Hugo Loewenstern with nine blue ribbons and a silver medal. third prize to Mrs J T Clark with a bronze. unique duet arrangement by Mrs Jason Robberson. several blue ribbons in Lullaby Arrangements and Baskets of Roses categories. The Switchmen's Union of North America canceled its June 1 strike against 10 Western railroads. Francis A. O Neill Jr of the National Mediation Board announced progress in negotiations and said efforts to settle disputes would continue. The union had threatened 6 000 members in vital yard service.
