Pickup Plunges Into Lake. City Man Dies in Canyon Crash

An Amarillo man died and four others were injured when a pickup rolled off a bluff into Buffalo Lake near Canyon. Victim Vernon H. Ellis, 35, of Amarillo, was killed. injured were Harold Barclay, Shirley Eileen Lonis, Herschell Dale Fisher, and Eva Lee, all treated at Neblett Hospital. Rescue efforts hampered by rain and wind.

Miracle Wheat Crop Near Wichita Falls Shatters Expectations

Wichita Falls May 26 Farmers in this region call their wheat crop a miracle as yields surge. Reports show 10 to 60 bushels per acre with tests at 62 to 65 pounds per bushel. The High Plains region endured a Saturday night of thunderstorms bringing needed moisture to crops. A flash flood occurred east of McLean with 3.50 inches in 20 minutes reported by Buck Henley, while winds toppled a drive-in screen and hail accompanied the rain.

Tribute to War Dead Planned in Memorial Park Ceremony

The American Legion sponsors a Memorial Day event at Memorial Park 24th and Washington next Wednesday at 10 15 a m with units from Amarillo Air Force Base. Lt Edward E Swanson will deliver the address and wreaths will be placed on a replica of the Unknown Soldier tomb. A crack drill team from the base will perform around the ceremony.
