End of Era as Amarillo Zinc Smelter Closes
The Amarillo zinc smelter will shut down Saturday marking an era end as about 400 workers seek jobs at ASARCO’s nearby copper refinery. Kenneth Preston of United Steel Workers Local 5613 says roughly 90 percent will apply, with around 90 eligible for pensions, as the new refinery plans to begin operation by year end.

Dayton Ex-Con Went Berserk in Rampage Killing 3
Russell Lee Smith, 28, an ex-con on parole since 1971, murdered his teen girlfriend Jean Marie Gatewood, 16, then shot and wounded nine others in Dayton Ohio. He killed Paulette Couch 25, shot others including a six year old, and kidnapped and raped two women before killing himself. Police described the spree as a chaotic rampage across the city ending with his suicide.
