Seabrook Texas reports the Apollo 10 wives endure worry as crews execute the transearth insertion maneuver. Barbara Cernan, Faye Stafford, and Barbara Young stay vigilant, attend church, and follow the countdown as the mission nears its journey home.
Barbara Jane Mackle named Gary Steven Krist and Ruth Kisemann-Schier as the abductors who captured her at a motel in December and buried her alive for more than eight hours before a ransom of half a million dollars. She pointed Krist out to Attorney Richard Bell, while Krist sat with his courthoused lawyers in a Decatur courtroom.
Apollo 10 crew Col. Thomas Stafford Navy Cmdr John Young and Cmdr Eugene Cernan returned to earth’s influence after 242 days near the moon. They expressed awe at their achievement and anticipated benefits for mankind as their capsule traced an invisible path toward a splashdown in the South Pacific at 11 51 a m Amarillo time Monday.
A 22-year-old Amarillo woman was killed and a 24-year-old passenger was seriously injured in a one car crash eight miles east of Amarillo at the I-40 and US 66 intersection. Karen Joy Peninger died at Northwest Texas Hospital. Jacalyn N Powers remained in serious condition.
Residents of the Golden Spread sent letters for the My Home Town contest. The top three winners will appear in the Daily News on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday morning respectively with an honorable mention and cash totaling 20 dollars.

Highlights include navigation checks, engine firing to adjust course, rest period, separation of the command ship, life support shift, reentry at 400000 feet, 24500 mph, and splashdown 395 miles east of Pago Pago in the Pacific.
The crew faced a long journey home aboard the USS Princeton as they return from the Moon. Stafford noted itching from cabin insulation and planned showers on landing. Ground control skipped a planned course correction due to a perfect trajectory and radiation readings rose to about five chest levels after their 4 hour rest.
U S Air Force sergeant Paul Meyer 23 vanished after hijacking a C130 and heading home from base at Mildenhall England. Search planes spotted an oil slick off Alderney in the Channel Islands and later wreckage, with officials assuming the plane went down and Meyer perished though a life raft possibility remained. Meyer from Poquoson Virginia had never flown combat and had been found drinking before takeoff on Friday. See plane on Page 2.
Senators ended 33-2 hours of filibuster to approve a breath test for suspected drunken drivers and sent to the governor a bill granting the governor emergency powers to curb riots. The House-passed measure also creates a University of Texas Medical School in Houston and Senate plans approve new medical schools at Midland Odessa Corpus Christi and Texarkana along with a San Antonio four year university.
Canyon Town official Robert Carr Vincent of Boise City Okla. named new president at the 48th annual meeting in Amarillo. Sen Grat Hazlewood steps down after two years as vice president Virgil P Patterson moves to first vice president and Joe Mabee elected to Patterson's former post. Col Wilson Speir of the Texas Department of Public Safety speaks at the banquet, noting the Rangers as the oldest continuous law enforcement agency with statewide jurisdiction.
