Bolivia Junta Leader Survives Ambush in Turbulent Mining District
Lt Gen Rene Barrientos, Bolivia's military junta president, survived an ambush as his motorcade moved from Cochabamba to Santa Cruz near the San Jose mine in Oruro. Two miners died and others were wounded as troops fired when miners attempted to join protests over Lechin’s expulsion. Barrientos, 44, faced eight assassination attempts in recent years, with a March motorcycle shooting injuring him in the thigh. A soldier was killed and four attackers captured.

LBJ Calls Campaign For Youth Jobs Expansion
President Johnson announced a special youth opportunity campaign to create at least half a million additional job and training spots for 16 to 21 year olds this summer. He named Vice President Humphrey to lead the task force and urged states cities firms unions and colleges to cooperate as two million youths will seek work when school ends. The president warned that youth unemployment is rising with the postwar baby boom entering the labor force next month and that about half of next month’s unemployment will be among 16 to 21 year olds.

CAPE KENNEDY UP I reports a 200 pound Fire spacecraft dived 25 000 miles per hour into Earth's atmosphere to measure the heat of reentry for Apollo command modules. The coned probe burned at about 20 000 degrees, two suns, as it sped to a planned crash in the South Atlantic. An Atlas launch carried Fire to 500 miles up. Antares fired to drive it back. This opens four space shots in a two week span culminating in the June 3 Gemini flight. Special telescopes on Ascension Island tracked the fiery descent as ground stations received temperature data.
