Capt. John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower son of Gen Dwight D Eisenhower will marry Barbara Jean Thompson on June 10 at Fortress Monroe Virginia. The notice lists associated vendors and contact details for lumber and stationery firms.
In Borger Texas area during a labor dispute at Phillips plants, union members and management clashed over negotiations. The company offered a five cent hourly wage increase plus a $20 monthly bonus. about 100 workers marched as gates opened for those wishing to return to old jobs.
Bob Hope and his radio troupe visit Amarillo for two shows at English Field and the Paramount Theatre. Mayor Hagg proclaims Tuesday Bob Hope Day as thousands greet the celebrity with the Will Rogers Range Riders and the Amarillo High School Band on hand. NBC plans include a KGNC spot broadcast, with an 8 p.m. Paramount stage show followed by a 9:15 p.m. Municipal Auditorium performance and a $10 seating option still available through Maxor Drug Store.
Amarillo merchants plan a two day goodwill special on Rock Island Lines visiting 16 Panhandle towns in Texas New Mexico Kansas and Oklahoma. Virgil Patterson leads the delegation with the Buffalo Band to greet towns from Wildorado to Dalhart Tucumcari and Liberal. A second trip is scheduled to depart Monday week via Fort Worth and Denver traveling south to Childress and back through Pampa and Borger.
City officials declare Tuesday May 20 Bob Hope Day to aid the Boy's Ranch at Old Tas-Coss in Amarillo and the Plains Region. Mayor Lawrence Hagy proclaims a day of hope to support facilities and safety improvements for underprivileged youth and residents.
Wheat farmers in Armstrong County surveyed hail damage from two days of storms. Estimates show around 12,000 acres of wheat damaged up to 75 percent in several strips near Claude and surrounding towns. Weather observers noted heavy hail near Childress and lighter falls at Pampa and other points with moisture totals listed.
Pedro Chevez of 203 North Cleveland died after being crushed while crawling under moving freight cars in the Fort Worth and Denver yards. He died at Northwest Texas Hospital four hours later. his right leg and left hand were amputated and a left leg amputation was considered. Survived by wife Felicia, three sons Polo Benny Abbino Chavez and daughter Catalina Chavez of Amarillo. Body at N. S. Griggs & Sons Chapel. funeral arrangements incomplete.
Miss Truman arrives Wednesday evening May 28 for a first tour stop in Texas. Tickets go on sale Monday at 109 East Ninth with mail orders accepted. prices range 3.60 to 1.20 including tax. Panhandle Concert Bureau notes a quick sellout and KGNC will broadcast post concert interviews from Municipal Auditorium.
Pickets for about 260 telephone traffic workers and 90 plant repairmen ended after a Friday night settlement. Workers returned to their Ninth and Tyler plant with a four dollar weekly raise, ending a six week payroll loss. Local 3024 and union officials coordinated the return to work and a measure of pay accuracy remains under review.
The Back Into Style picket lines are temporarily removed but may be restored if no agreement is reached by Monday. Local telephone workers must decide actions on crossing any restored line. Western Electric, the Bell system supplier, is installing gear in a new addition to the telephone building as a nationwide strike affects about 77 000 unsettled workers including 55 000 Western Electric employees. Houston crews have not returned due to the ongoing picket line while Dallas Fort Worth and Lubbock workers already resumed work.
The torpedoed battleship Oklahoma, raised from Pearl Harbor, sank in the mid Pacific at 1 40 A M 540 miles northeast of Pearl Harbor without a crew aboard. Towaged by tugs Monarch and Hercules last week she listed heavily before snapping tow lines and disappearing to three miles down.
