Thousands visited Amarillo Air Force Base for Armed Forces Day displays. Visitors viewed air, water, and ground exhibits including Army helicopters Navy aircraft and Marine displays. Highlights included the B 52 Stratojet and various inspection lines for the public.
Utah 10,000 teachers were urged to boycott classrooms for two days to press for $6 million in education funding for 1964-65. The move followed Gov. Clyde’s refusal to call a special session. A statewide Utah Education Association meeting was set for Tuesday to decide next steps.
Dayton Gene Cline 21 his wife and three children survived a trailer fire on Carl Cline 55 farm near Four Corners Oklahoma 16 miles south of Elkhart Five family members including two children were hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation after they rescued each other from the flames delaying help when the telephone line was destroyed
An apparent American mystery man broadcast a Spanish numeral code on a powerful short wave station aimed at Cuba. Havana Radio offered no comment on a prior exile-landings report while monitors noted possible interference. The man’s identity and origin remain unknown though he likely lives in Cuba.
UNC officials said the admission that American pilots committed espionage was made to satisfy North Korea, not to reflect fact. The pilots were on a routine mission when their helicopter was downed. they were in uniform and not saboteurs. The UN record remained clear about the truth of the case.
President Johnson and top aides including McNamara and Rusk weigh a bold plan to boost economic and military support for Saigon as hearings loom. Taylor joins the briefing as the U S already deploys 16,000 troops and about 550 million dollars yearly in aid. The ongoing guerrilla war worsens as McNamara prepares to testify to Congress next week.
Two light U S made Austrian planes collided at 2000 feet over Vienna. All seven aboard died as wrecks set buildings and cars ablaze. A Piper with two on board narrowly missed theatergoers near the Josefstadt Theater while a Cessna with five hit an apartment in the Neubau District. Police said both planes were cruising over the city.
The sun shone 34 days out of 17 in 1964 with little temperature change expected today under partly cloudy skies. A few rain drops may spill this afternoon. more detailed forecast appears on Page 2.
The University of Texas Board of Regents ordered immediate desegregation of housing and dining halls across the system, adding a policy against discrimination. About 30,000 students are in the system. approximately 150 Negro students are at the Main campus. Regents approved the action despite earlier protests and noted few changes will occur until fall.
Oregon voting boosted Gov. Nelson Rockefeller in a bid to derail Barry Goldwater’s march toward the GOP nomination. The Oregon results give Rockefeller 92 142 votes to Lodge 77 344 Goldwater 49 197 with 3 251 precincts counted and California looms with 8 convention votes. If Rockefeller wins California Goldwater’s path to the nomination weakens, altering the July 13 San Francisco convention race.
