President Eisenhower warns it would be a fearful gamble to cut defense spending as Soviet might threaten the free world if they believed they could prevail. He defends the 71.8 billion dollar budget and urges public support to save money and curb inflation while paying down the debt.
Plainview residents approved four general obligation tax bonds totaling 495000 for street improvements water works airport upgrades and fewer improvements. Street work passed 592 86, water works 409 69, airport improvements 306 168, fewer improvements 411 68.
Shelby Kruser, president of Tradewind Airport Corp., asks Amarillo City Commission to consider selling Tradewind Airport to the city. He envisions municipal ownership funded by appraisal and a 50 percent federal share under the National Airport Act, with city costs possibly as rent rather than cash. The airport now serves about 76 private and corporate planes as a secondary field to Amarillo Air Terminal.
Washington May 14 Charges by natural gas producers that the Harris O Hara bill would keep tight price controls were sustained by federal regulation advocates. Producers argued amendments favored by the Eisenhower administration would still bind under federal control. Wisconsin AG Stewart Honeck said he could support the measure if costs were considered by the Federal Power Commission in setting reasonable gas prices.
Area residents will view a large two day display of U S military strength on Armed Forces Day at Amarillo Air Force Base. Highlights include parades flyovers and arrival of state and area dignitaries with aircraft such as a B 36 F 100 Super Sabres KC 97s and T 33 trainers. Governor Price Daniel will arrive at 10 30 a m Saturday and deliver the Armed Forces Day address after a reception and luncheon. A 1 30 p m parade will feature about 3 000 troops led by the 3341st Student Squadron Drum and Bugle Corps.

Gov. Price Daniel appoints Charles F. Hawn of Athens to the Texas Highway Commission and names Marshall Formby of Plainview as chairman. Hawn replaces Brady Gentry. Tyler remains on the panel. Formby is an attorney and former state senator serving on the commission for four years.
Amarillo Senator Grady Hazlewood fought the insurance reorganization bill in the Senate arguing against House amendments and a conference motion. He warned the proposal to abolish the current board and replace it with a new three member panel appointed by Gov. Daniel would be bad public policy and threaten regulatory stability.
