A severe drought grips Florida as a high pressure system blocks rain. Cattle die, fruit wilts, and Everglades wildlife faces possible extinction. About 5,000 fires burn across the peninsula, endangering groves and prompting Florida Forest Service crews to work nonstop to save property worth millions.
In Hannibal Missouri volunteers combed a scout camp forest and cave network near Murphy's Cave for three missing boys Edward Dowell 14 Joe Hoag 13 and Bill Hoag 11. A sock found near Murphy's Cave is the only clue as searchers use a German shepherd a metal detector cave radio and a St Louis TV unit to speed the search.
