Prisoner Is killed in Freak Mishap in Houston

In Houston on May 13 a police car hit a bump, a shotgun discharged fatally wounding Clyde Thompson, a 31 year old Black man who had confessed to raping a 15 year old white girl. Inspector Joe Clark claimed responsibility for the accident as detectives had Thornton Thompson in custody for questioning about a filling station robbery and the prior assault.

Flood Stricken Lampasas Faces Death Toll and Damage

Floodwaters surged through Lampasas Texas after a broken levee Sunday night. Five people were unaccounted for and searchers probed debris for more victims as 750 residents fled homes and 38 houses were destroyed. Community buildings and a church were damaged and water supplies were contaminated. Rescue teams delivered food water and medicine while photographers described houses picked up like a cyclone and fronts caving in in minutes.

The Red Cross shelters refugees as floods and tornadoes sweep north and east Texas. Dozens of twisters damage towns from Lampasas to Dallas and Waco, with 30 deaths reported and thousands displaced. London to Los Angeles Super Saber Jets Set Nonstop Record

Three Air Force pilots landed in Los Angeles after a 14 hour 6 200 mile nonstop flight from London in the F100C Super Saber fighters. The crew refueled in flight three times and completed a lengthy westward route via Labrador James Town and Langley AFB. The mission aimed to train pilots to deter aggression and marked the first long nonstop jet flight of its kind. Capt. Jack Bryant Capt. Alain Engle and Lt. Theodore E. Adjournment minded senators passed back to the House a lobby registration bill and a conservation water storage plan. The lobby law, recommended by the legislative council and Gov. Price Daniel, would make Texas the second state with such a statute. House action included a four million dollar measure easing funding by a bill aiding three gas companies.

Teachers protest as tax refund plan eyed for state funds

An estimated 500 teachers from the State Teachers Association marched through the Capitol opposing an appropriations bill they say would freeze state aid at April 1 levels. Rep J T Ellis and Rep Max Smith defended the bill saying no such freeze is intended while the Senate considers the claims bill and possible uses for teacher pay raises.

Army reporter describes Lampasas Texas flood damage as 100 percent wrecked in the courthouse square area. Pvt Bob Matheison interviewed victims and reported that a trailer resident, John Mulholland, was carried by the water after a wall of floodwater from a levee breach struck his trailer around 9 p.m.

Tornado injures twenty one in Conway Arkansas

A tornado hit Conway Arkansas injuring at least 21 people including nine elementary pupils. The storm leveled eight homes damaged a school and business blocks. Twelve hospitalized with Mrs Elwin Lasley in critical condition. her three children were at home when the house was thrown. Teachers urged pupils to take cover as the tornado struck.

Western League scores and results from five games

Colorado Springs defeated Des Moines 8 to 1 and Sioux City beat Pueblo 5 to 2. Topeka won 9 to 6 over Amarillo. Lincoln swept Albuquerque 3 to 2 after winning the second game 1 to 0. In the American League Washington edged Boston 5 to 3 in the only game scheduled while the National League had no games.

Pool Rezoning Sparks City Planning Hearing

Cab driver leads chase to arrest of doctor killer in Oakland

A cab driver while following a fleeing gunman at high speed radioed police and helped arrest a suspect within 11 minutes after Dr. Harold G. Trimble 61 was shot on a sidewalk near Pill Hill in Oakland. The suspect S Sydney Klass 53 later confessed firing six shots blaming his wife’s 1954 death.
