Berlin Patrols Halted by Russians on Helmstedt Autobahn

Western Allies faced confusion as Russian border guards barred patrols entering from the Helmstedt end of the Berlin Autobahn. Commandants said they notified General Vasily Chuikov, with officials noting a possible misunderstanding and no stated cause for the incident amid looming anniversary of the Soviet Berlin blockade.

Boy Injured As Car Collision En Route To Hospital

A 12 year old Amarillo boy Lawrence E Taylor was head on in a collision in the 2700 block South Fillmore while being taken to St Anthony's Hospital after his thumb and two fingers were severed in a hobby shop joiner accident. He and his father Marion Taylor escaped serious injuries. Mrs Roy Conley driver of the other car and James Malone who opened a parked car door were treated as needed. Both the boy and Mrs Conley were reported in good condition.

Three Hurt In Collision At Vernon and East Tenth

Three men were injured in a collision between a pickup and a 1941 Chevrolet at Vernon and East Tenth about 3 30 Saturday. Ezar Garrison Jr Donny Lee Whelchel and Francis Staffon were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital with head and facial lacerations.

Child Drowns in Tank Near Borger

A 17 month old girl Joyce Ellen VanGarvan daughter of Mr and Mrs Willard VanGarvan drowned in a stock tank on the Earl Henderson farm near Morse. The accident happened while the mother was away at a neighbor's home. She died en route to North Plains Hospital Borger and the body lies at Minton Funeral Home with funeral plans pending.

Two Charged In Borger Swindle

Borger Texas May 10 two residents Lorene Sanders and R E Sanders were charged with swindling by conversion in connection with passing the worthless parts of a check stub on two occasions. They were brought to Borger from Woodward by Hutchinson County deputies.

High Hail and Tornado Do Heavy Damage North of Hereford

A double threat tornado and hail storm struck farms north of Hereford causing extensive property, crop, and livestock losses. Sheep killed on the John Hutchinson farm while other growers reported broken barns granaries and vehicles. No injuries reported.

Hail ruins neon signs in Amarillo city center

Amarillo businessmen and farmers estimated Friday afternoon hail damage in the thousands of dollars. Polk Street suffered the most with about 75 percent of neon signs damaged. Wheat east of Amarillo Air Terminal suffered about 30 percent crop damage but may recover. Convertible cars also sustained shellacking as vendors report sign and street damage.

Major Neil H. Lathrop, 30, of Los Angeles, chief of the flight test branch at Edwards Air Force Base, identified as the flier killed in yesterday’s crash of a Martin XB-51 Flying Cigar three jet bomber at Edwards.

Canyon Palo Duro outing ends with 54 stranded group safe

Stratford High School juniors and seniors with 10 sponsors were stranded overnight in Palo Duro Canyon after Palo Duro Creek flooded Crossing No 1. They rode in 12 cars and two buses until the group reached safety around 7 am. Rock slides blocked access Friday night, but park staff cleared the road and reopened the highway to the end of the park.

Allied Units Chase Reds For 2 Hours

Allied patrols raided Communist frontline positions on the east central Pukhan River sector in a two hour clash. The Eighth Army said 16 Reds were killed as one Allied patrol pursued Communist squads for 30 minutes. Western Front patrol clashes followed an early artillery duel and outpost withdrawal and recapture west of Korangpo.
