Heavy soaking rains across the Panhandle South Plains, the wettest since last October, lift crop prospects with estimates of 0.75 to 2 inches in places. Lubbock to Shamrock reported totals up to 1.66 inches, while Floyd County and Dalhart also recorded substantial totals and growers expect rapid field work once soils drain.
Tickets for the Bob Hope NBC broadcast show at the Paramount May 20 go on sale tomorrow at Maxor Drug Store with prices 10 and 5 dollars. A second show at Municipal Auditorium will be sold Thursday with seats by section and prices from 1 dollar upward. Proceeds benefit Boys Ranch and include a water system. donations and reserved seats are encouraged, with special front section seats available.
Gov Beauford Jester will be guest of honor at the Will Rogers Range Riders rodeo at Tri State Fairgrounds in Amarillo. The event runs July 3 5 with Jester confirming his appearance in a phone call to Judge E H Foster Range Rider member.

In Dade City Florida Sheriff announces 23 year old Arthur Berry a Jacksonville Beach solicitor is charged with the murder of 14 year old Willie Mae Benton who had moved from Danielville Georgia with her aunt. The girl was found stabbed with multiple wounds after a struggle in an orange grove.
Twelve people died and fifteen were injured when two trains collided at El Emperador Station near Ciudad Real about ninety miles south of Madrid, officials said.

A two year old horse on a Mexico City to Long Beach cargo flight escaped its stalls and charged the cabin between Monterrey and El Paso. The crew fought to control the animal for two hours before an emergency landing at Ed Anderson Field. Veterinarian Dr Everett Siemar tranquilized the horse and secured it for the rest of the flight.
Marjorie Swanson, 20, told from a hospital bed how a motorist crossed onto the wrong side of the street at midnight, hit her and her mother as they walked, dragged her to bushes at the State School for the Deaf, and beat and threatened to kill her. Police pursued the driver as a search intensified. the mother suffered bruises and shock while the daughter bears facial and body injuries.
General Ira C. Eaker told USC alumni at a luncheon that the United States must be prepared for attacks by long-range bombers or guided missiles via the Great Circle route. He criticizes wasteful spending and notes his retirement set for June 15 while stressing war’s uncertain timing.
In New York on May 10, police reported two men, diamond merchant Solomon Rossbach and clerk George Seafried, both died by suicide amid recession worries. Rossbach leaped from the Empire State Building after 1.20 ticketed visit to the 86th floor. Seafried died on the subway tracks near Woodhaven after an engineering firm's layoff notice.

Little Rock was named next convention city as over 200 attendees wrapped two day sessions.

Near Roswell New Mexico on May 10 Mrs C A Marley a ranch woman entered the sheriff s office with a rope and found a hog tied man who had been riding her missing horse valued at 300 She then turned the ranger over to Sheriff George Wilcox and deputies.
Local 577 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters averted a planned 30 day strike after a 24 hour session ended with a rejection of the final offer. Workers back on the job Saturday morning include about 75 men from several operators. The dispute centers on wage scales and a 51 hour week, with potential impact on Texas and interstate traffic if a strike materializes.
Istanbul May 10 The US House approved President Truman’s aid program for Turkey and Greece amid relief and concern over Russia’s likely reaction. Turkey’s 150 million share will fund military needs and improved communications, with much of the money buying modern arms and boosting strategic links.
The Civil Aeronautics Board set a regular air mail rate of 45 cents per airplane mile for Pioneer Air Lines Inc a feeder in Texas effective June 1 1947. Pioneer had 35 cents rate temporarily and a lump sum 505 420 for service Aug 1 1945 to Aug 31 1946 plus a 60 cent rate for Sept 1 1946 to May 31 1947. Routes include Amarillo Lubbock Abilene Mineral Wells Fort Worth Dallas Waco Temple Bryan Houston Austin San Angelo Midland Odessa and Lamesa.
