An informal canyon business poll shows a wide majority in favor of building the Amarillo Canyon Expressway. Numerous shop owners endorse the plan, noting economic growth and regional connectivity, while a few remain undecided or cautious about costs.
Former Amarillo mayor recall stresses bond issues and expressway plan as key for progress. Lt. Gen. Ernest O. Thompson credits underpasses and major improvements for keeping the city in business and urges turnout for the bond.
Amarillo city officials suspended two officers, J. L. King and C. E. Hodges, after a Potter County Grand Jury indicted them for false statements under oath related to a $200 cash gift. Both surrendered to the sheriff, were released on bonds, and no interim appointments were set. The grand jury also listed multiple department allegations and named other officials in a lengthy report.
The bulletin records 120 sunny days in Amarillo of 128 in 1954 with evening readings from Houston Dallas Oklahoma City and Amarillo showing mostly partly cloudy skies and moderate winds.
Thunderstorms drenched Amarillo with heavy rain and hail, flash lightning caused outages at two TV stations and a radio timeout. The Globe News roof gauge showed 1.32 inches by midnight while the Weather Bureau station logged 0.66 inch. Dumas reported a trace as local observers measured 0.25 inch at KFDA tower east of the city.
Former Russian aircraft expert Valentin Sokolow told House investigators that in 1946 an American Berlin officer refused asylum to Mig G-15 designer Sigfried Gunther. He said another colonel agreed with the decision and warned the case harmed US security. Sokolow recalled Stalin’s remark on Gunther and noted the later CIA gift offer to a Communist pilot to reveal Mig-15 construction.
A 15 year old pupil admitted taking a dark green Cadillac belonging to Zippy the Chimp after police traced the car to the teen and to the television simian who performed with trainer Lee Ecuyer. The incident occurred as the boy was driving to school in Cleveland.
Gen. Navarre reported in Saigon that Chinese troops aided the fall of Dien Bien Phu. He cited a Chinese unit entering the fortress and said the French commander Brig. Gen. Christian de Castries was captured. About 8,000 French soldiers were prisoners as the siege ended.
French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault urged a cease fire in Indochina at the Geneva talks 24 hours after Dien Bien Phu fell. Molotov tied talks in knots by pressing Laos and Cambodia admission. US rejected Red China and Laos Cambodia participation, citing disputes over Vietminh dissolution and Khmer Pathet Laos governance. The siege ended as French forces endured heavy losses, with Navarre citing 4000 French casualties and 18000 Red casualties. Internationalization urged as France cannot sustain a full offensive.
At the Texas Young Democrats gathering in San Antonio on May 8, about 200 delegates from 30 clubs criticized Governor Allan Shivers and praised Ralph Yarborough. Yarborough urged volunteers to energize against opponents, framing the race as a fight within the Democratic Party.
Partly cloudy conditions with a daylong temperature rise in Amarillo vicinity from 55 to 86. West Texas remains partly cloudy Sunday and Monday with widely scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. New Mexico shows generally fair conditions with scattered showers in northern mountains Sunday afternoon.
Amarillo plans a 10 30 AM comedy parade to launch the Clean Up Paint Up and Fix Up campaign sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and organized by the Jaycees under Laddie Cernehouz. Mayor Bud Curtis will read a proclamation from a waste disposal truck at Fifth and Polk. The parade forms at Fifteenth and Polk and heads north on Polk with comedy and features for children.
