Washington May 7 AP A circle of experts meets in shirtsleeves to decide what to tell the public about the Salk polio vaccine program. Surgeon General Leonard Scheele urged halting mass inoculations after a long meeting, postponing inoculations until a Sunday statement is released.
AMA official Dr Dwight H Murray provided seven cautions for the public in Chicago on polio vaccine plans. He urged against hysteria, vaccinating sick children, condemning the vaccine, expecting overnight production, 100 percent effectiveness, black market rumors, and following alarmist advice amid vaccine shortages.
A White House conference on polio vaccination plans shifted as officials consider a 30 day delay. Dr. Scheele and noted researchers including Dr. Salk debated scientific issues while the Public Health Service urged postponing programs until a Sunday statement.
The Committee for Economic Development urged broad income tax cuts of three to five billion dollars next year to spur growth. The plan favors higher incentives for high earners, with smaller cuts in corporate taxes and excise taxes on liquor tobacco and autos if feasible. The report, led by Frazar B. Wilde and J. Cameron Thomson, notes no specific figures but ties to Eisenhower era tax policy and possible congressional action in a presidential election year.
Fort Worth doctors protest secrecy over polio vaccine testing. They will withhold further shots until every batch is tested and lot numbers are provided. The Tarrant County Medical Society committee demands direct confirmation that each batch has undergone adequate testing before endorsing continued school vaccination.
In Hobart Oklahoma a three year drought spurred Dr J R Bledsoe to urge citizens to prove faith by wearing rain coats or carrying umbrellas on a declared Rain Day Mayor Buster Watkins called for the same to conserve water. About six hundred residents, roughly a ninth of Hobart's population, joined the effort despite no forecast of rain. The Oklahoma Weather Bureau in Oklahoma City noted a heavy downpour at Hobart at 6 pm.
Mrs. Cecil Cayton of Amarillo, 69, was named Golden Spread Mother of the Year and received gift certificates totaling 1550 from 50 cooperating stores. Nominated by her husband and chosen by Gen. Walter Agee, she has six children, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and has lived in Amarillo 44 years.
In Paris on May 7 1950 Britain urged the United States to back an early top level Western Four summit with Soviet Premier Bulganin. The session followed a stalled Indo China debate as Dulles Faure failed to report progress.
Nearly 200 Future Farmers of America from seven districts gathered at Amarillo High School for Area I Leadership conference. Officers elected, Area FFA Sweetheart judged during J Garland Smith Farm and Ranch Show on KGNC TV. McLean FFA band and Levelland’s Glen Hardin named to represent the area at the 1955 state convention. Miss Colvin Wade of Groom named Area I Sweetheart. Foster Parker of Canyon named area state office candidate and Area Star Lone Star Farmer. Four top applicants for American farmer degrees selected by the review committee.
National Democratic chairman Paul Butler will begin a Texas tour June 14 in Lubbock. He will visit East Central and South Texas and close with a Young Democrats convention speech in Houston. The Philadelphia dinner fundraiser featured Kefauver with Yarborough as toastmaster, signaling a liberal effort to shift Texas party control from Governor Shivers.
Considerable high cloudiness and warmer Sunday in Amarillo and vicinity. Monday turns cloudy and cooler with temperatures ranging from 50 to 84 degrees. West Texas partly cloudy Sunday and Monday, cooler in the South Plains with daytime highs around 75. Overnight lows near 57, sunrise at 5:56 a.m. and sunset at 7:38 p.m.
Doctors in Chicago report Rodney Dee Brodie, the 34 year old who was joined as a Siamese twin, appears to be improving after a brain hemorrhage threatened his life. He remains in a coma but looks better and resting comfortably.
Weather tally reports Amarillo recorded sun on 116 of 127 days in 1955. Yesterday at 3 PM observers logged wind speed, visibility and sky conditions with notes of partly cloudy to clear conditions. A miscellaneous line appears to reference Dodge at Hedgecoke's.
