Potter County voters approve legal alcoholic beverage sales by 12 467 to 8 324 in the heaviest ballot since 1952. Total 20 791. Poll watchers reported calm voting with few delays as many first time voters signed ballots. Wettest box Carver School 702 66. five of 30 boxes voted dry.
Two Panhandle counties voted dry and two retained their wet status in a regional election. Local officials reported turnout figures and noted the mixed results across Carson County communities.
Representatives of the wet forces in Carson County said they would contest today’s local option liquor election. A spokesman noted the vote would be challenged after Carson County residents voted 971 to 949 against legal sales of alcoholic liquors.
Saturday’s local option elections produced dry margins in Carson and Oldham counties. Carson County with three wet precincts Panhandle Groom and Conway voted 971 to 949 to go dry while Oldham County stood dry by 330 to 211. One counting box at Boy’s Ranch could not alter the outcome as remaining votes were few.
Republicans largely skipped precinct conventions in Amarillo with 51 attendees across six meetings. At Herring Hotel, Charles Miller declared himself chair and delegate for Precinct 1, while Mary Warren was named alternate. Precincts 12 and 13 held large meetings adopting unit rules, with 12 backing the Bricker Amendment and a tax cap on income, and 13 urging action to boost Republican candidate support.
Weather forecast for Amarillo and surrounding areas indicates fair conditions Sunday with continued mild tonight. South Plains mainly clear to partly cloudy with possible scattered thunderstorms in eastern parts. Panhandle cooler. New Mexico expects fair Sunday and Sunday night with little temperature change.

U S Sen Lyndon Johnson defied Gov Allan Shivers by winning Texas Democratic delegates. A Gulf Coast surge gave Johnson 1060 delegates to Shivers 182, securing a majority of the May 22 state convention ballots. Johnson, who had recovered from a heart attack, claimed a decisive political victory in a heated campaign.
Randall County delegates face continued strife at precinct conventions with Shivers and Johnson factions contending for control. Reported totals from six precincts show 48 for Shivers and 32 for Johnson as rump conventions form in Canyon and South Amarillo.
Lyndon Johnson appears favored for the party nomination as Potter County Democrats meet to elect delegates. Johnson led with 186 of 252 pledged units while four precincts voted for 50 Shivers delegates. Several precincts sent uninstructed delegates, rump conventions formed in some areas, and interposition and states rights were discussed.

A rift in Democratic Precinct 11 led to 26 voters walking out of Cathedral Hall for a rump convention next door to a bingo game. The meeting began at 7 30 p m with Mrs F H McGregor presiding. A H Chesser and James Sanders were nominated for convention chairman and Chesser won 30 to 21 amid heated nominations for secretary.
Panhandle precinct conventions mostly favored Johnson with delegates aligned to the Johnson Line. Gray and Randall counties showed clashes with Shivers supporters, while Deaf Smith reported 24 Johnson and 19 for Shivers in Hereford and Dawn boxes. Wellington endorsed Johnson and a tax abolition measure for incomes under 12 000.
